The autonomic nervous system is part of the peripheral nervous system. It governs our 5 senses, and is responsible for our sleep-wake cycles, hunger, thirst, digestive system, metabolism, immune system, temperature of our body -- all those autonomic functions our body does.

The autonomic nervous system has 3 parts: The sympathetic nervous system, the parasympathetic nervous system and. the social engagement system.
